The Internship

The start ( week 1 – week 3 )

My internship started on 1 September 2010 at the VIA IT Service at VIA University College, Horsens, Denmark.
From the beginning we had no idea what we should do ( me and my colleague Boris ). Our boss found us a desk where to put our laptops and sit comfortable. And we were waiting for some orders.

From the beginning of the semester the VIA IT Service was very busy fixing problem they had to fix during the summer, so the semester will start fluently – but not.
Unfortunately,  from the start we had to make guidelines how to use a spoiled school system. Guidelines, which I even didn’t deliver because they were already obsolete.

Later on we had a meeting with the two bosses, and one of them shared an idea about a piece of software, which I started developing the next day. The next post will include more about this particular program.

With the time passing, creating guidelines wasn’t enough and we started helping out the IT Service team, dealing with student problems from 08:00 to 11:30, at their office.
What we basically did was to help them install the via printers, tell them to reinstall their computers, clean them from viruses, tell them their passwords from studienet or mail, and help them install software they had to use.

Then a teacher of ours, wrote an email to Hans Ole (the boss) and asked if we can help him with a problem he had with his classes.
Problem: Students using x64 OS can’t download their compiled programs to the NXT brick. more info can be found here: http://lejos.sourceforge.net/ , http://robotc.net/
Solution: One of the solutions was to install a x86 OS, clear and nice, but not a general solution to the problem, because a reinstall takes a long time.
Final solution: We made a VMware virtual machine running Windows XP Professinal x86 with preinstalled drivers and programs, that can be easily copied and redistributed among OSs with x64 Architecture.

So we continued our work on helping students from 8 to 11:30.
