Week 4

This week the Group Folders should be ready. Their developer gave us the program, we tested it and made guidelines for using it. We sent and email to all the students to download the needed program and hopefully use the group folders as intended.

I would call this week the Apple week, because whole week I am dealing with MacBooks and Apple Software. Our work from 8:00 to 11:30 , I don’t know how to call it … student help or helpdesk probably, gave me the opportunity to work with MacOS a lot. Installing software is waaaaay easier that anything else, but configuring BootCamp or using Disk Utility can be a real pain in the ass sometimes. Basically, I got the idea of how MacOS works, and how Steve Job’s keynotes are really just marketing bullshit. “We don’t have Service Packs”, but you have a MacOS 10.5 Combined update which is 800MB, right??? “MacOS doesn’t have to restart after updates”, but I restarted a MacBook 6 times to finish all the updates, right???

Next thing was the MacBook that we got from the IT Service. One morning Peter, ( other boss ) came with a brand new MacBook box, which me and Boris opened with a great delight.
Of course, after the first run, and the first update – MacOS 10.6 Snow Leopard needed to be reinstalled, it crashed…

We got the MacBook in order to test the new printing system in VIA which is still not present. But it is supposed to work on MacOS as well. At least Xerox have drivers for MacOS on their website. I hope they will not make the webservice they might use, OS dependent as the old one, which is currently up and running.

Sidenote: Only old students ( students who were here previous semester at lest) can print right now in the university. This is a shame and I hope the new system will be something really good, so it can wash away the shame from their IT faces.
