Trojan Attack

Yesterday I got a trojan from a file a downloaded from the Internet. I knew the possibility of this file being infected, but I had to risk it because I really needed this one thing to work.

After I executed the exe file I just knew something wrong happened, because it deleted itself 🙂

So, the damage:

  • Windows 7 Security Center cannot be turned on
  • Microsoft Security Essentials cannot start
  • IE popup windows about “winning” iPhone 4 🙂
  • The Windows Gadgets don’t work anymore. ( The script doesn’t load )
The fix:
  • Uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials and install Avast! Free Antivirus
    • Made boot-scan and full scan – found some malicious files in Google Chrome’s local data and deleted them.
    • Avast kept blocking URLs and finding bny.exe & taskeng.exe and asking what to do with them.
    • I deleted the bny.exe bnx.exe bnw.exe from C:UsersuserAppDataLocalTemp and taskeng.exe from C:WindowsSystem32 using Unlocker 1.9.1
  • Turn on Security Center Service from services.msc
    • Run services.msc as Administrator (Very Important!)
    • Find Security Center and change Startup Type to “Automatic (Delayed Start)” and start the service.
I didn’t return back to Microsoft Security Essentials and now I use Avast! Free Antivirus.
The Security Center starts with no problem.
After:
  • Windows Gadgets still don’t work. I haven’t figured out a way to make them work again.
