All I need is focus

Finding What I want

This is the easiest. I want it all and it has to be now! Perfect, right?

There are many exciting things out there that I want to do: climbing, bungee jumping, yoga, taking tango lessons, learning a martial art or working on your own software projects. Travel the whole world. Meet amazing people. Many, many more.  A few of those are written down somewhere on a long forgotten to-do list. Or even worse – I am daydreaming about them once in a while.

If I am not doing all those things, what am I doing then?

I am doing the things I truly love. That at least has to be the answer. I am not a person who would get himself trapped into doing something that is not by his liking. The things you don’t question.

However, a confusion arises, when you do not know why you do things anymore. This is the moment you should pay attention to, because that is your inner voice, asking you: “Hey dude, sure… I get it, but why?” If there’s no answer from the “other side”, needn’t worry, things are about to change and definitely for the better.

If I don’t know why I do what I do, how would I find out what I want to do?…

By now I’ve found a few things that I don’t want to continue doing and made a list of the things I want to do! Then made a new list of the things I want to do right now!

Start the doing

Well, that is easy! The just-do-it philosophy is not that difficult to follow when you have all the excitement of finding an amazing new adventure!

Too much excitement and motivation in the beginning might burn out faster than you think. This is definitely my case and I have been there many times before.

Not long after I got into marathon training, I’ve decided to postpone it. Multiple attempts to get six-pack abs by hitting the gym on a regular basis have failed miserably because I lose interest or simply see some results and tell myself: “It’s good enough! I’m sleeping in today”.

It’s frustrating to see you haven’t reached your goals and especially when you both want to see the results but don’t have enough motivation in walking every single step of way. Are the goals too high, or am I too lazy? Why did I lose interest, or did I? Questions like this are driving me crazy sometimes, but I believe I have the answer now.

I cannot keep focus.

I am constantly on a run for excitement, something new and amazing!

“There’s so much to explore and so much to do!”, a.k.a. my best friend and my biggest enemy.

How to focus

Focusing does not mean forcing it.

Focus will train my brain a useful pattern, so the body fulfills what the self wants!

This is the hardest part in the process of getting something done. That’s my personal challenge. So far I’ve done quite a few things that I didn’t need motivation for. Those things I know now that I truly love and I should keep doing. But there are others that are more like “healthy habits”. That’s how you get good at something.

All I had to do is to plan my week.

Yes. First time I do that properly I guess. Integrating habits into the daily life to keep you going where you want to go.

Example: You want to be a good guitar player? Take 20 min 3 times a week or more. That’s 1h+ playing instead of sitting 1 day for 1 whole hour playing. It is also proven that repetition with shorter duration is more effective than long sessions done once a week.

I never struggled taking 10 or 5 every now and then for meditation. It’s one of the things I enjoy, so I never have to think about it. However, I realized that there are other things I want to do and be good at and I would need that push.

It may sound like a really simple solution, and it is in fact, but it is not that easy to follow. At least not for me.

Now that I have the week mapped out and planned, let’s see how it goes. If it works – you should see a new post from me on Saturday.
